Luena – The organization of the 31st African Senior Men's Championship “Afrobasket”, in 2025, in Angola may put the country on the continental tourism route, according to the economist Domingos Mussango, in Luena, Moxico province.
Speaking to ANGOP, after the African Basketball Confederation (FIBA Africa) confirmed Angola as the organizer of the competition, the macro and microeconomics university instructor considers that it is a “great” opportunity for the country to continue attracting tourists and potential investors to the sector.
To make the most of this sporting event on the continent, he said that the country must continue to organize tourist attractions, to facilitate the accommodation and attraction of more visitors to the national territory.
In this sense, according to the academic, there is a need for the training of tourist guides, as well as the definition and continuous dissemination of existing tourist attractions and hotel chains.
“The private sector must anticipate and take action, with the dissemination of information and products via digital platforms, so that those planning or arriving in Angola find all the conditions created,” he said.
In the same vein, the former coach of the Moxico basketball team, Zeferino Menezes “Coach” understands that this event could project the country's image across the border, despite revitalizing the national sports movement.
According to this specialist in team sports, Angola must begin to mobilize itself from a sporting and administrative point of view for the success of this competition, in order to return to the continental title, taking into account the evolution that the sport has registered, as a result of the investment that many States carried out, citing the example of Tunisia, Senegal, Mali and Rwanda.
On the other hand, he defended the inclusion of some cities in the interior of the country, for what will be the fourth edition that Angola will host, after having already done so in 1989, 1999 and 2007, to reinforce national unity, in the year in which the country celebrates 50 years of National Independence.
The last test held by Angola, in 2007, took place in five cities, namely Luanda, Cabinda, Benguela, Huambo and Huíla.
The National Senior Men's Basketball Team has 11 continental titles, the first being won in 1989, in Luanda, with coach Victorino Cunha, and the last in 2013, in Côte d'Ivoire, under the guidance of coach Paulo Macedo.
