Luanda - Namibia reiterated Tuesday its interest in acquiring the services provided by Angola's ANGOSAT-2 satellite, Namibia’s Minister of Information and Communication Technologies Peya Mushelenga has said, ANGOP has learnt.
The Namibian official reiterated his country’s interest to Angola’s minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Media, Mário Oliveira, on the sidelines of the World Radio communications Conference (WRC) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The meeting held at the request of the Namibian side, discussed the current levels of cooperation betwen the sectors led by each incumbent minister, with ANGOSAT-2 at the top of discussions as it remains in negotiation stage, the statement said.
It adds that in addition to Namibia, Zambian communications operators are at a more advanced stage in negotiations with Angola to benefit from ANGOSAT-2 services from 2024 onwards, as Minister Mário Oliveira told the press during the COP-28.
Mário de Oliveira said negotiations are currently underway with foreign operators, adding that the satellite, as such, is in a position to provide any type of communications service.
The Satellite Mission and Control Centre was inaugurated in January 2023 by Angolan President João Lourenço, an intelligent infrastructure with multiple engineering advantages.
The Angolan minister added that some countries have already expressed their intention to buy the services of ANGOSAT-2.
The WRC-23 World Radiocommunication Conference is being promoted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations' specialized agency for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
The event that ends on December 15 brings together national government bodies and telecoms regulators, the main users and suppliers of radio communications worldwide
With an expected lifespan of 15 years, the Angolan satellite ANGOSAT-2, launched into orbit on 12 October 2022, is one of the projects of the Angola National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN), a body attached to the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technology and Media.EH/AC/DAN/AMP
