Talatona- The climate services programme of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region called “ClimSa” was launched Tuesday in Luanda.
Launched by minister of Telecommunication, Information Technology and Mass Media, Mário Augusto Oliveira, the programme is meant to provide updated climate information.
“ClimSa” programme was presented during the workshop on climate services in the SADC region, running from 8 to 13 May, with Angola as the focus country.
Addressing an opening ceremony, the minister mentioned the main objectives of the event.
Among the goals, Mário Augusto Oliveira referred to the creation of communication channels and involvement processes with national institutions, as well as raise awareness and start the technical implementation of each country´s activities in the scope of the climate services programmes and apps related to ClimSa of the SADC.
He said that Angola was selected as the focus country by the member states in September 2021.
The objective is to implement a set of activities, such as the development and the demonstration of a national production chain of climate services and the integration of the same services perspective considering national policies and programmes.
He stated that the programme aims to contribute to the adaptation of efforts of the SADC member country towards climate change by providing science-based services to national and regional planning processes.
“This involves strengthening the value chain of climate services by building the capacity of decision-makers at all levels to effectively use climate information and services”, he said.
In turn, the director general of the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INAMET), João Afonso, revealed that the programme was submitted to a evaluation in which among the participating countries, Angola presented the best report due to the modernisation system which is being implemented at INAMET.
