Luanda - The Angolan winners of the SADC Journalism Award 2022 received this Wednesday, in Luanda, their certificates, in an act presided over by the minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Media, Manuel Homem.
Cândido Calombe, from Televisão Pública de Angola (TPA), distinguished in the television category, emphasized that the award could make Angolan journalism an example in the Southern African Development Community
(SADC) region and in the world. On his turn, Jaquelino Figueiredo, from Jornal de Angola newspaper, said he was thrilled to be participating for the first time and getting second place in the press category.
Minister Manuel Homem considered this victory by Angola to be "unprecedented" for winning two first places and a second in the contest, in a year in which the country strengthens its democratic system, which requires improving continuous media activity.
He urged the winners to continue to dignify the merit achieved and that pride and dedication be permanent features in their work.
The ceremony was attended by the secretary of State for Media, Nuno Caldas Albino, and the secretary of State for Telecommunications, Mário Oliveira, in addition to the chairpersons of the boards of directors of public media organs, some ministerial staff and guests.
Angola was the big winner of the 2022 edition of the SADC journalism award in the Radio and Television categories. In the press category, the country took second place.
The winners were announced during the 42nd summit of SADC Heads of State and Government held in the Democratic Republic of Congo last August.
In the radio category, journalist Aristides Kito from RNA won, in Cuando Cubango, with the report on the “Impact of the locust plague on food security in SADC”.
In the television category, the first place went to journalist Cândido Calombe from TPA, in Zaire, with the report on the “Importance of the Zaire River in SADC”. In second place and in the press category the prize wwent to journalist Jaquelino Figueiredo, from Jornal de Angola newspaper, with a report on “Cross-border trade between Angola and the DRC – A sought-after trade route, but which needs to remove obstacles”.
The SADC Journalism Award was established in 1996 to recognize and encourage the work of media professionals who contribute to the objectives of integration and development in the region.
In this edition, Angola competed with eleven candidates, according to the president of the award jury, Anastácio de Brito.
The 2022 edition of the SADC Journalism Prize was launched in October 2021 by the Southern
African Development Community Secretariat, based in Gaberone, Republic of Botswana.
The competition is open to all Angolan journalists, as citizens of a SADC member country, whose works were published from January 1 to December 31, 2021, by a media outlet or internet portal, duly registered and authorized.
