Ondjiva - The impact of the Social Protection Strengthening Program named Kwenda, in reducing levels of hunger and poverty in families, was praised on Thursday, in Ondjiva, by the provincial secretary of National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) in Cunene, Torga Pangeiko.
Speaking to ANGOP about the benefits of it, the politician highlighted that the program, implemented by the Angolan Government, is helping many families who were in a vulnerable situation in the country.
To Torga Pangeiko, with the creation of the program, families have the opportunity to benefit from monetary values to purchase food and satisfy other basic needs.
He said that many are investing in business, farming, purchasing seeds and cattle breeding, for food production and animal reproduction, creating sustainability in communities.
Depending on the social situation of the families, he suggested extending the kwenda to all areas affected by the drought, with the aim to help populations that had no agricultural income in the fields, due to irregular rainfall.
In the province of Cunene, 60,686 families from the municipalities of Ombadja, Curoca and Namacunde have already benefited from around 4.4 billion kwanzas, from May 2020 to June 2024, informed the local director of the Social Assistance Fund (FAZ), Eduardo Silunda.
The official said that the program is increasing the purchasing and financial capacity of families in rural areas by creating small businesses, as well as purchasing food products such as massango.
In total, 93,49 households are registered in Cunene, of which 11,926 in the municipality of Cahama and 9,908 in Cuvelai, which will soon receive monetary transfers.
The program, which was operated by the Local Development Institute (FAS), is valued at USD 420 million and is financed by USD 320 million by the World Bank (WB), with another USD 100 million by the Angolan Government. PEM/LHE/OHA/MRA/DOJ
