Luanda - Members of civil society, on Wednesday in Luanda defended the need for media professionals to provide quality information as a way to combat disinformation on social media.
The event organized by the Mosaiko Institute for Citizenship, which is the round table on “Journalism and Citizenship”, brought together the secretary-general of the Angolan Journalists Union (SJA), Teixeira Cândido, academic Rogério Buco and activist Luaty Beirão.
Participants emphasized the role of journalists, in their duty to inform responsibly, in order to enlighten citizens.
During his explanation, the SJA general-secretary appealed to the participants to adopt this training, even though it is a risky profession anywhere in the world, depending on the security guarantees of each state.
Teixeira Cândido also mentioned that due to the absence of these guarantees and protection of press freedom prevents many young people from embracing this profession.
In turn, academic Rogério Buco said it is necessary for media professionals to guarantee quality information, with the use of technical resources being important in the search for the truth of the facts, thus avoiding Fake News.
Activist Luaty Beirão considered the profession constructive, as well as destructive, being noble and dangerous, taking into account the security guarantees.
"Often, information is transmitted without due investigation or without respecting news criteria that guide the good practice of the profession, such as the crossing of information", he highlighted.
Founded in 1997 by Dominican Missionaries, MOSAIKO is an Angolan, non-profit Institute dedicated to promoting Human Rights in Angola.
