Luanda - The general secretary of the Trade Union of Angolan Journalists (SJA), Pedro Miguel, on Tuesday in Luanda informed that the organization intentends to institutionalize the 17th of December date as “Day of the Angolan Journalist”.
This is due to the celebration of two years since the first march for Press Freedom took place on this date in the country.
The information was provided at the end of the lecture under the theme "Freedom of Press and Opinion as Human Rights", promoted by SJA to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the first march for Freedom of the Press.
“The institutionalization of the data is due to the achievements of the first march on Press Freedom held on December 17, 2022”, explained Pedro Miguel.
He highlighted the fact that they have not yet reached a consensus on the subject with all professional groups or associations, but the day of the Angolan journalist has already been reflected on and could soon be publicized, perhaps this could be discussed at the second National Conference of Journalists.
Pedro Miguel also expressed happiness with the interest of journalists and media students in debating in depth issues related to Press Freedom and Human Rights at the meeting.
On the other hand, the trade unionist highlighted that the biggest challenge facing the body he heads has to do with the lack of space to build the SJA headquarters, a mission that must be accomplished by the end of his mandate.
In turn, Jurist Domingos das Neves, who participated in the event as a speaker, praised the initiative of holding the first lecture on Press Freedom held by the SJA.
He admits that it is always an important moment when people meet, mainly journalists and communications operators, whose role is to transmit and inform the population to create collective awareness.
