Lubango – At least 631 unexploded devices were removed Thursday from an abandoned warehouse in Palanca commune, Humpata municipality, central Huila province by the National Demining Centre.
The number of unexploded ordnance found buried in the local has risen to 694, with 162 anti-personnel mines of the OZM4 type, 15 85mm mortar bombs, 22 82mm mortar bombs, 27 60mm mortar bombs, six F1-type hand grenades and 462 rounds of ammunition of various calibers.
Speaking to ANGOP on Friday, the spokesman of the National Demining Centre, Fernando Katyavala, said the team continues to verify and certify that the area is mine-free and that the devices will be destroyed in compliance with the Ottawa treaty on the eradication of landmines.
He pointed out that during this period, as part of Mine Risk Education and Prevention, 43 people have been raised awareness, including adults and children who live nearby the place, where the ordnance was found. BP/MS/DAN
