Ondjiva - Magistrates of the Public Prosecutor's Office on Saturday learnt about the concerns of inmates at the Peu Peu prison, located at Ombadja municipality, Cunene province.
The interaction was part of the body's responsibilities, and was part of the 45th anniversary of the Attorney General's Office marked on 27 April.
During the consultation process, the prisoners raised issues related to excessive pre-trial detention, late notification of charges and requests for conditional release from the courts, which are slow to respond.
Speaking to ANGOP, the public prosecutor at the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) in Cunene, Fernando Miguel, said that there are no cases of excessive pre-trial detention in the prison.
During the activity, the Peu Peu penal population benefited from blankets, a donation from the public prosecutors.
Fernando Miguel said that although they are not enough, the material will alleviate the current problems, at a time when the rainy season is approaching.
The Peu Peu penitentiary, the second largest prison in the south of the country, is located 130 kilometres from the city of Ondjiva. It has a penal population of 1,312 inmates. FI/LHE/OHA/AMP
