Luanda - The Ombudsman's Office received a total of 5,000 complaints related to procedural delays, excessive pre-trial detention, land disputes and problems with pensioners during the first quarter of this year, the Ombudswoman Florbela Araújo said Friday.
Speaking about the Ombuds Day celebrated on October 10, the official highlighted the increase in awareness about the ombudsman's role in the country, taking into account the number of complaints received, which tends to increase.
“The increase in the number of complaints means that citizens are becoming more aware, but it also shows that some still insist on violating citizens' rights,” the official said.
According to Florbela Araújo, her institution is working to minimize the number of registered complaints by interacting with institutions about rights and duties, underlining that some staff of the ombudsman's office have encountered difficulties to carry out their duties in some ministries and administrations.
The magistrate called on the government's administrative bodies to respect the work carried out by this institution, and to respect the ombudsman's role, as determined by the Constitution of the Republic.
She recalled that the Ombudsman's actions contribute to improving the protection of citizens in cases of poor performance by state institutions, bodies, services or agencies.
The Ombuds Day was established by the American Bar Association in 2018. MEL/OHA/AMP
