Luanda - The United Nations intends to intensify cooperation with the Angolan Ombudsman's Office on issues related to the defense of citizens' rights, its interim resident coordinator Antero Almeida Pina has said.
“I reaffirm the United Nations' commitment to continuing to support the Angolan Ombudsman's Office, not only to strengthen its capacities, but also to expand its positive influence throughout the country,” Pina said.
Speaking at the celebrations of the Ombuds Day (October 10), the coordinator stressed that this institution plays a unique role in instilling and reiterating the principle of “Leaving No One Behind”, contained in the 2030 Agenda, as well as the principle of “Non-Discrimination”, present in the Angolan legal system.
The UN official emphasized that it contributes to combat discrimination against all forms of gender-based violence and to promote equality in different bodies and services of the Angolan state.
Regarding the date, the representative said that it serves to reflect on the fundamental role of the Ombudsman's Office in promoting legality and defending fundamental rights in the country, and beyond.
For the coordinator, the ombudsman presents itself as an informal, independent, neutral and vigilant body in the defense of citizens' fundamental rights.
“In today's context, where we are facing global and local challenges, its role is more relevant than ever,” said the coordinator, for whom there is a need to expand the ombudsman's services.
