Luanda - The new secretary-general of the Angolan Women's Organisation (OMA), female wing of the ruling MPLA party, Joana Tomás, said today in Luanda, that it was necessary to strengthen actions to awaken young women's interest in politics.

Speaking at the closing session of the 7th Congress, which elected her as secretary-general, she said that in a country like Angola, where the majority of the population is young, it is urgent to strengthen actions to awaken young women's interest in politics.

She considered that despite the positive signs seen in the social sphere, "we still need to remove many obstacles that prevent women from truly participating in political life".

She recalled that at this congress OMA had approved a programme with targets that would only be met if more women were mobilised for the organisation in order to strengthen it, as it is the mobilising engine of the MPLA. "The OMA is the eyes, the ears and the mouth of the MPLA," she said.

The elected secretary-general recalled in her speech the need to support rural women, announcing that she will advocate for the facility of obtaining micro-credits.

With regard to illiteracy, Joana Tomás took the opportunity to appeal to the organisation's militants to volunteer, recalling that in a not too distant past, the statistical data were positive, but today they indicate that there are still many women who have yet to become literate.
