Luanda - The media plays a crucial and irreplaceable role in informing and shaping public opinion about the diagnosis and prevention of breast cancer, the secretary of State for Media, Nuno Caldas Albino, said Wednesday in Luanda Province.
The information on the issue should focus on breast self-examination and screening mammography as a way of preventing the disease, which is 95 per cent more likely to be cured with early and efficient treatment.
Speaking at a lecture on the "The role of the media in breast cancer prevention”, promoted by a female nucleus of the public Angolan National Radio (RNA), the secretary of State for Media emphasized the role of the sector in education, raising awareness and diffusion of messages related to the disease.
He recommended that the media prioritise careful preparation, leading to a didactic, clear, assertive and transparent narrative, reinforcing values and credibility, adding that the role of the media in disseminating messages that sensitise citizens, especially women, will make citizens' participation clearer and more convincing.
With regard to the role of the media in breast cancer prevention, Nuno Caldas Albino said it was imperative to reflect on establishing a commitment to generating content of public interest with human values aimed at contributing to development.
He encouraged the RNA women to deepen efforts to mobilise more and work effectively with institutional partners to promote greater health, social harmony and sustainable development.
He also urged women to go for early diagnosis regularly.
On the occasion, the spokeswoman of the RNA’s female workers, Emília Kacongo, asked media professionals to step up actions towards the diffusion of messages about cancer.
The lecture took place as part of World Breast Cancer Day, which was marked on the 19th of this month.
