Luanda - The Emeritus Bishop of Benguela, Cardinal Eugénio Dal Corso, passed away on Sunday in Negrar, Italy, victim of an illness, at the age of 85, ANGOP has learned.
Eugénio Dal Corso was born in Grezzana, Italy, on May 16, 1939.
From the Congregation of the Poor Servants of Divine Providence, Eugénio Dal Corso was ordained a priest on July 7, 1953, in his homeland.
After spending time in Argentina as a missionary, he arrived in Angola in 1986, in the Diocese of Uíge where he was rector of the Diocesan Major Seminary of São Paulo for 6 years.
He was elected coadjutor bishop of Saurimo on December 30, 1995 and ordained bishop on March 3, 1996.
In 2005 he held the position of apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Cabinda, as diocesan bishop of Saurimo.
He was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI bishop of Benguela on February 18, 2008, being replaced in 2018 by Dom António Francisco Jaca.
At CEAST (Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé), he served as general secretary and Chair of the Episcopal Commission for Catechesis and Evangelization.
He was named cardinal on September 1, 2019 by Pope Francis.
