Luanda – The training of staff, modernization of bodies and improvement of the contents disseminated continue to be the main goal of the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, aiming at a journalism increasingly focused on promoting the rule of law and democracy, as well as country's development.
This fact was reaffirmed by the Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário de Oliveira, Wednesday in statements to the press, on the side-line of the 1st National Conference of Journalists, under the motto “Free, ethical journalism and worthy'.
In this regard, he referred to the improvement of the facilities and contents of the Journalists Training Center in Luanda and the completion of the works of the Regional Center in Huambo, which will be a major booster for the training of journalists in that region of the country.
As for distribution of content, Mário de Oliveira appealed to the media to focus on the country's moral and cultural values and on the presentation of the country's cultural potential.
As an example, he highlighted the creation of Radio and Cultural newspaper, as well as television programs that promote culture in the country.
On May 3, Press Freedom Day, the minister said that it should be as a reflection on the positioning of the journalistic class in society and its commitment to the country.
He congratulated the journalists for the noble mission of training and informing, the Union of Journalists and the Portfolio and Ethics Commission for the initiative and homage to many journalists “who gave their all to the development of journalistic activity in the country, as well as those who have already died.”
The minister considered journalistic activity noble and, for that reason, it should be exercised with impartiality, responsibility and patriotism, contributing to the development of democracy in the country.
On his turn, the chairman of the Union of Journalists of Angola (SJA), Teixeira Cândido, asked for the members to do a free journalism that is unique, capable of being at the service of democracy and strengthening the democratic state and the rule of law, as well as the development of the country.
The representative of the European Union in Angola, Jannetth Seppen, underlined the importance of ethical and responsible journalism, encouraging moral and cultural values.
The World Report on Freedom of the Press indicates that Angola raised four more places in the ranking on compliance with this Constitutional principle, moving from the 103rd position, in 2021, to the 99th, in 2022.
