Luanda - The Angolan minister for Social Action, Family and the Promotion of Women, Ana Paula do Sacramento Neto, on Monday at UN headquarters in New York met with the Executive Director of Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and an Under Secretary-General of the United Nations, Winnie Byanyima, with whom she discussed the inequalities faced by girls, adolescents and young women in the fight against the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic.
During the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, the two interlucutors discussed strategies for accelerating progress towards the commitment to end AIDS, as set out in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In this context, the commitment of Angola's First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, was highlighted, as was the work carried out by the Ministry for Social Action, Family and Promotion of Women (MASFAMU) on mechanisms to prevent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), early marriage and pregnancy, in an integrated effort with the Ministry of Health and partners such as United Nations agencies, namely United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), UNAIDS and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The meeting also dealt with the technical updating of Resolution 60/2, which the UNAIDS executive director emphasised has the support of the African Group.
Winie Byanyima is leading the United Nations' efforts to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
