Luanda - Thousands of catholic worshipers attended Sunday the closing of the pilgrimage to Muxima Sanctuary, marked with messages about the challenges of a more active role of the church in building a world in service of the poorest and marginalized people.
The event, which began on August 4 started with prayers, chants and praises as a manifestation of faith and gratitude for the graces obtained by the pilgrims.
Speaking at the pontifical celebration, the Archbishop of Luanda, Filomeno Viera Dias, highlighted the need for the church to continue its civic responsibility actions ahead of the general elections on August 24.
The prelate appealed to Angolans to be careful with the words they say and the initiatives they take to avoid tensions and conflicts.
The pilgrimage to the Muxima Sanctuary is the largest Catholic festival held in Angola and dates back to 1883. The place is located on the banks of the Kwanza River, at Muxima village, Kissama Municipality.
The Muxima Sanctuary is located about 130 kilometres off the city of Luanda.
The pilgrimage took place under the slogan "Mama Muxima, in your hands we place the people of Angola”.
