Luanda – The National Director of the Ministry of Education (MED), Soraya Kalongela, announced Tuesday in Luanda, the expansion of the “Child-Friendly Schools” project across the country, as part of the implementation of 11 child-friendly commitments.
In the first phase, the aforementioned project is being implemented in 17 schools in the province of Huíla.
The national director for Pre-School Education and Primary Education was speaking at the workshop for the evaluation and presentation of support manuals, promoted by the Ministry of Education.
According to Soraya Kalongela, the “Child Friendly Schools” project aims to promote activities related to basic sanitation and lectures in communities.
As part of its expansion, she highlighted the production of complementary support material for primary education linked to water and sanitation, hygiene in schools, inclusive pedagogy, school management and literacy as fundamental.
According to the director, the project promotes the participation of parents and guardians, at a time when there is little involvement of these in monitoring children.
The official recommended, on the other hand, the creation of educational gardens in schools, to teach and encourage children in agricultural production.
Child Friendly Schools is a project of the Ministry of Education, in partnership with UNICEF, which has been running since 2019.
The director informed that, in this context, more than 200 teachers have already been trained.
The 11 Commitments to Children were adopted by the Government of Angola in 2007 and revised in 2011. They concern child survival, food security and nutrition, birth registration, early childhood education, primary education and vocational training, as well as Justice Youth, HIV/AIDS, violence against children, social protection and family skills.
The commitments address the media, culture and sport and the planning and budgeting system. They provide a general framework for promoting children's rights in each of these areas. AB/OHA/CF/DOJ
