Luena – A Photovoltaic Power Plant with the capacity of 32,2 Megawatts (MW) will be installed soon to electrify the Municipality of Luau, in the eastern Moxico Province.
To be installed in an area of 67 acre in three phases, the power plant will have 79,77 MWh of storage in lithium-ion batteries, and the project was presented to the local population this Wednesday.
The project mentor from the MCA consortium Francisco Medina said that the electrification of the municipality of Luau is a wish of the Angolan Government which already gave significant steps for its implementation.
On his turn, the deputy administrator for technical area of Luau, Elias Capenda said that the choice of this locality was well done taking into account that it will provide development.
In the framework of the electrification of the country the goal of the Government is to build Photovoltaic Solar Power Plants in the provinces of Benguela, Bié, Huambo, Moxico, Lunda Sul e Lunda Norte, making a total of 370 megawatts of installed capacity in an investment of above 500 million Euros, also with financing from the Sweden Exports Promotion Agency (SEK).
Therefore, Angola will join the African countries with the production of solar power such as Kenya, South Africa, Algeria, Ghana, Morocco, among others.
Regarding public expenditure the production of electrical power through solar plants will have the advantage of saving about one billion liters of fuel daily.
Currently it is esteemed that 60 million people use solar power as source of electricity in Africa, a continent which almost 87% of low income people that live in sub-Saharan rural areas does not have access to electricity.
Meanwhile, situated 335 kilometers to the east of Luena Municipality, capital city of Moxico Province, the municipality of Luau that borders with Zambia has an estimated population of 89,453 people, mostly peasants.
