Luau – The Social Cash Transfer Programme (Kwenda), launched in 2020, has disbursed an overall 5.1 billion kwanzas to assist 79,040 vulnerable families in the east of Angola, the regional coordinator of the Local Development Institute (FAZ) João Simão Mungongo has said.
The amounts benefited 79,040 vulnerable families from six municipalities of Luau and Luchazes (Moxico Province), Muconda and Cacolo (Lunda Sul), Cuango and Cambulo (Lunda Norte), with two and three payment instalments, respectively.
The FAZ regional director made the statement at the closing ceremony of a training session for technicians from this institution and the Social Action, Family and Gender Equality offices (GASFIG).
According to Mungongo, families from the municipalities of Camanongue (Moxico), Dala (Lunda Sul), Lóvua and Caungula, in Lunda Norte, are currently being registered to benefit from the programme this year.
Mungongo said that over the next six months the FAZ would pay the third and fourth instalments to the first group of municipalities.
Kwenda impact on Luau municipality
Evaristo Samuel, 25 years old beneficiary, told ANGOP that he used the money from the three instalments to start an informal business, opening a commercial establishment in his residence.
With the same initiative, Tchissuza Cahango, 68 years old, acquired three goats that have multiplied, having currently 15 goats.
The KWENDA Programme is an initiative of the Government of Angola, which aims to support 1,608,000 families in situations of poverty and vulnerability in the country.
It has benefited from 320 million US dollars from the World Bank and USD 100 million from the National Treasury totalling USD 420 million.
The programme is paid quarterly, in four instalments over a period of one year, with each household receiving 25,500 kwanzas/month.
The programme is operated by the Local Development Institute (ex - Social Support Fund - FAS), a government agency that in coordination with other anti-poverty programmes contributes to the promotion of sustainable development of the communities.
