Huambo – At least 940,000 families have been assisted with cash transfers in 86 municipalities of Angola by the System for Social Protection Strengthening (Kwenda) from 2020 to 2023, the director of the Local Development Institute (FAS) Belarmino Jelembi has said.
Speaking at an assessment of the program in central Huambo province, the FAS director said so far 1.5 million households have been registered, of which 940 have already benefited from cash transfers.
Jelembi added that the program has made it possible to develop an integrated social protection information system that has registered to date, almost four million people from different categories of vulnerability.
The FAS director said the Kwenda is making a remarkable progress and positive impact on the lives of the families, who are using the financial resources for the agricultural sector, especially to buy seeds, goats and other inputs to support their families.
Fernanda Chitumba, a beneficiary who lives in Cachiungo municipality, said she is using the money to promote agricultural production and to improve the living condition of her family.
Venâncio Junta said he will buy products of the basic food basket to resell on the informal market to feed his family.
At least 146,281 families have been assisted by the Kwenda program in Huambo province from 2020 to December this year, following the registration of 208,425 households in the municipalities of Bailundo, Cachiungo, Ecunha, Londuimbali and Mungo.
Kwenda is co-funded by the World Bank (320 million US dollars) and the Angola National Treasury (100 million), with the aim to provide assistance, in phases, to 1.6 million needy families in the country. ZZN/ALH/AMP
