Talatona – Novo Jornal newspaper journalist João Marques Pontes, based in the centre-west Benguela Province, won the second edition of the Catoca Journalism Prize.
The awards gala was held on Tuesday in Luanda Province and was attended by several personalities, among government officials, representatives of Catoca group, as well as media professionals.
The journalist won the prize with a storyt on the country's seafront which portrays the ins and outs of the undeclared and unauthorised fishing that has been taking place in recent days.
The news report has the recognition of the minister of fisheries, Carmem do Sacramento Neto, who warned of the danger that activities of this kind can cause to the sea.
Other professionals who were distinguished in this edition are the journalists of the Angola Public Television (TPA), namely Fernanda Manuel in the category of newscaster and Boaventura João in the category of national language, Mauro Guilherme from Radio Eclésia based in Lunda-Norte station won the category of the the best radio host of the eastern region of the country, however, the news reporting category was won by two journalists, namely Álvaro Victória from Novo Jornal and Pedro Narciso from the public newspaper.
Arimateia Batista, from Huíla province, won in the image category and Ezequiel Cori in the interview category, both journalists are from the public newspaper.
The Catoca Journalism Award, which is valued at 20,500 kwanzas, honoured the grand prize winner with 3 million kwanzas and the winners in the different categories both received 2,500 kwanzas, a statuette and a diploma.
According to data, 109 professionals applied for the award, and only eight were honoured in seven categories.
In this second edition, tribute were paid to 22 journalists, including Adérito Ferreira and Maria Stela da Silveira, from the Angola Press Agency (ANGOP), Ana Lemos, Carlos Rosado, Adérito Kisunda, Salas Neto, Vânia Varela, Suzana Mendes, among others.
At the time, the chairman of the jury, Teixeira Cândido, called for compliance with the ethical aspects of the journalistic pieces, due to the fact that applications had been rejected for violating the principles of contradiction.
