Luena - The National Institute for the Fight against Drugs (INALUD) has defended the construction of a detention centre for drug addicts in eastern Moxico province to meet the high demand of citizens seeking help to stop drug addiction.
This was expressed by the institution's representative in Moxico, Laurindo Firmino, during an address to Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) personnel on "The consequences of alcoholism within the organization".
According to Firmino, every month an average of 20 families requests INALUD help to hospitalize relatives in drugs, however the lack of an establishment for this service has made it impossible to better accompany these people, especially young people.
Laurindo Firmino expressed concern about the high rate of young people consuming large quantities of alcohol and called on the population to refrain from this behavior, as it has various economic, health and social consequences.
Family breakdown, isolationism, financial problems, cognitive incapacity and low production in the workplace are some of the consequences of excessive alcohol use.
Figures from the National Statistics Institute indicate that Moxico province has around one million inhabitants, more than 70 per cent of whom are under the age of 30. TC/YD/DAN/AMP
