Luanda - The Angolan government plans will soon implement an apprenticeship allowance in vocational training centres, the secretary of State for Labour and Social Security, Pedro Filipe, announced Tuesday in the Province of Luanda.
The subsidy will be applied through the National Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (INEFOP), corresponding to 60% of the national minimum wage.
The official took part in the 11th thematic session of “Communicating Angola”, a programme promoted by the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technology and Media.
Pedro Filipe explained that the introduction of an apprenticeship allowance is a model that is applied almost everywhere in the world and recently the International Labour Organisation (ILO) adopted a recommendation that guides states to find strategies for retaining staff, adding that the government aims is to reach the maximum number of young people, especially in rural areas, where drop-outs are usually due to the displacement of trainees.
He explained that the target trainees are generally shepherds, as they tend to move around looking for better pasture for the cattle.
Pedro Filipe said that by the end of 2027, the government plans to fund more than 130,000 professional traineeships.
In turn, the secretary of State for Media, Nuno Caldas, said that these programmes have contributed significantly to the reduction in youth employment.
The programmes also help to boost self-employment.
