Luanda - The fight against road accidents in Angola is a task that should involve the whole of society, the Swedish ambassador, Ewa Polano said Wednesday night in Luanda.
Road accidents are the second leading cause of death in Angola, which in the first quarter of this year alone claimed at least 599 lives and 3,000 injured, as a result of 2,890 road accidents.
The diplomat, who was addressing a press conference on the visit of the Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Road Prevention, Jean Todt, said that it was not only the work of the State, but an action that requires the participation of all, respecting the rules, in order to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on Angolan roads.
She said that Sweden always tries to transmit relevant information about safety on the roads, as in her country there is zero tolerance to this type of death.
"Sweden is the first country in the world with the lowest road death rate because road safety involves a whole society," she said.
The European nation's diplomat reiterated that her country is a true partner of Angola and that the private sector can be preponderant, with successive training activities.
In his turn, Jean Todt appealed for greater rigour in the use of helmets and seat belts by motorcyclists and drivers as a primary model to avoid death, and only afterwards should one educate from an early age on the measures to be used by all those who think of joining motor sports.
