Ondjiva – The National Police of Angola arrested on Thursday two citizens aged 22 and 31 in Ondjiva city, southern Cunene province for selling skins of various endangered animals.
Speaking to ANGOP, the head of the Cunene provincial environment department, Tchingungo Contreiras, said that this was an environmental crime, at a time when the country is investing in the preservation and conservation of flora and fauna.
Contreiras said the Presidential Decree 10/11 prohibits the hunting, use, transport and commercialization of animals under threat of extinction.
"Despite the economic and financial difficulties that families are facing, it is necessary to avoid this type of action and place more value on green economy practices in order to guarantee families' livelihoods," Contreiras said.
Tchingungo Contreiras explained that the sector is facing great difficulties in controlling poaching, illegal logging and anarchic burning, due to the lack of inspectors. FI/LHE/OHA/AMP
