Lubango - A group of Angolan counterfeiters aged 37 to 45 were arrested over the weekend in Lubango, southern Huila Province, in possession of 960,000 fake US dollars, which they allegedly intended to introduce in the local financial system, the police spokesman chief inspector Fernando Tongo, has said.
According to the police spokesperson, the perpetrators were arrested on Saturday and Sunday inside a residence in possession of the values spread in a bag with nine lots of USD 100,000 each and 30,000 apart, while the remaining 30,000 were inside a cell phone box in another house in the city.
The chief police added that the arrest was made by the Investigation Department of Criminal Acts in Huíla, in coordination with the Reaction and Patrol Unit (URP).
The chief inspector stated that at least two women who reside in Luanda and Lubango were arrested at the moment they were strategizing to introduce the counterfeit money into the local financial system to later obtain real notes.
The suspects said that the counterfeit money belonged to a Nigerian citizen, who supposedly guaranteed them a 480,000 dollars reward and that the notes in question came from Luanda and Benguela provinces, the Police spokesperson said.
According to the police chief, investigations are being carried out to locate and arrest the alleged supplier resident in Luanda and other persons involved in this counterfeit crime.
