New York - The Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) on Thursday in New York reaffirmed its commitment to multilingualism and the principle of parity among the six United Nations languages.
Speaking on behalf of the CPLP at the 12th Plenary Meeting of the Fourth Commission, the Angolan Permanent Representative to that world body, Maria de Jesus Ferreir,a praised the efforts of the Global Communications Department (GCD) in prioritising multilingualism in all its work.
“Due to the challenging and critical global context, the CPLP praises the fundamental role played by the GCD in supporting the implementation of the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Objectives”, she said.
Maria de Jesus Ferreira stressed that CPLP welcomes the continued efforts of the GCD aiming to extend its digital reach in key themes with the Sustainable Development Objectives, climate action and peacekeeping.
According to the ambassador, CPLP noted that the new digital communication means and platforms of traditional media are essential for the provision of more efficient services, rejoicing in the use of social media as a major driving tool to reach a global audience, especially for young people.
Regarding the “Verified” campaign, Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries encourages the GCD in its engagement in positioning the United Nations content as a source of accurate and credible information for the world public and to extend its efforts to fight the misinformation in other fields such as climate changes and hate speeches.
The CPLP reiterates its support to the DCG´s actions in leading responses to crisis communication at national and worldwide, including fighting misinformation, praising efforts to assist the United Nations agenda on the sustainable development, peace and security, human rights and other challenges faced.
The community reiterates its commitment to the pursuit of its objectives to disseminate information on UN activities in Portuguese language.
Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and Timor Leste are the nine member states of the CPLP.
