Luena - Six people drowned in the Luau River last week, in the province of Moxico, while trying to smuggle fuel to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The information was passed on to the deputies of the 3rd Committee of the National Assembly (AN) by the head of Security and Operations of the National Police command in the municipality of Luau, Dionísio Jorge, during a meeting with parliamentarians who traveled to the region to check the state of the Angola/DRC border post.
In addition to the deaths, law enforcement seized 231,320 liters of fuel, 160,532 liters of which were diesel and 11,365 empty 25-liter containers.
He reported that smuggling is carried out at night and early in the morning, most frequently by Angolan and DRC citizens.
The official called for the need to increase the number of National Police staff in the district, as well as technical means and transport to redouble surveillance on the vast land and river border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The president of the 3rd Commission of the National Assembly, Alcides Sakala, promised to present a report to the competent authorities to minimize the issue.
