Menongue - The Civil Protection Multisectoral Commission in Angola’s southeastern Cuando Cubango has mobilized 74 tones of miscellaneous goods and 20,000 sheets of zinc to support the people affected by heavy rains.

Speaking to the press at the end of the emergency meeting, the Commission's spokesman, Albano Cutarica, said the distribution of the goods will take place soon in Menongue municipality, where the rains have caused the most damage in the last three days.

The spokesperson said the health sector has been instructed to remain alert and ready to deal with any diseases that may appear as a result of the rains, as well as cleaning companies to be more proactive in carrying out their duties.

He added that media outlets have been urged to raise awareness among the population about disaster prevention methods resulting from the heavy rainfall in the province in recent days.

The installation of lightning rods in public and private institutions, areas of higher population concentration and other neighborhoods was also recommended as an action that should continue to receive the Commission's attention.

The civil protection and fire services report shows that from August 15, 2023 to January 11 2024, there has been a great deal of human, economic and social damage in some municipalities in the province, including the death of 26 people and 47 injured.

Heavy rains caused the destruction of 59 public and private infrastructures, the collapse of 134 homes, partial destruction of 506 others, totaling 640 homes affected, with an equal number of families corresponding to 3,200 people affected. MSM/FF/PLB/AMP
