Huambo - Angolan national citizen aged around 37 was killed on Saturday morning by a Benguela Railway passenger train in the municipality of Cachiungo, central Huambo province, ANGOP has learnt.
In a press release, the Civil Protection and Fire Service said that the incident occurred in the Huambo - Cuito (Bié) direction, specifically in the vicinity of the 17 de Setembro neighbourhood, two kilometres from the municipal town of Cachiungo.
The victim, reads the document, was found at one end of the line, where he was removed by the Civil Protection and Fire Service, in the presence of National Police personnel, and taken to the morgue of the Cachiungo Municipal Hospital.
Witnesses at the scene say that the unfortunate man was loading wood in the Lonundo forest and, in an uncontrolled manner, was fatally struck by the train as it passed along the railway line.
This is the first case of its kind in Huambo province this year, with CFB stations in seven of its 11 municipalities, namely Chinjenje, Ucuma, Longonjo, Caála, Huambo, Chicala-Cholohanga and Huambo.
The last one was in May 2023, when an 18-year-old girl lost her life on the stretch linking the cities of Caála and Huambo.
The CFB has a railway line of 1,344 kilometres, running from Lobito (Benguela) to Luau (Moxico), with 67 stations along its length. ALH/DAN/DOJ
