Mbanza Kongo – At least three people died and one was injured as a result of the rains that have fallen in northern Zaire province in recent days, ANGOP learnt on Tuesday.
The information was disclosed by the second command of the local Civil Protection and Fire Service, Eduardo Matumona Kiangebeni, adding that the deaths occurred in Tomboco and Soyo municipalities and that the victims were children under the age of 15.
The firefighter commander clarified that the death in the commune of Kinzau, in Tomboco, happened when the children were caught by surprise in the classroom by torrential rain accompanied with strong winds that blew the roof off the school.
As regards to the tragedy in the municipality of Soyo that killed two children, the second command said it happened when they were bathing in the rain and unexpectedly drowned in a sinkhole.
Since November, rains in Zaire province have destroyed 15 homes and left 108 others flooded in Soyo and Tomboco municipalities.
The commander added that in the first fortnight of this month, in order to help the affected families, the Zaire Civil Protection Commission has supported the funerals of three minors killed by the rain in the municipalities of Tomboco and Soyo with unspecified amounts of money. DA/JL/DAN/AMP
