Huambo - The suspect in the murder of the elderly woman found inside a freezer in her home in central Huambo province was arrested Tuesday by the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC), the local SIC spokesman sub-inspector Abel Kangombe said Thursday.
According to the SIC spokesperson, the main suspect in the death of the 64-year old woman is a 17-year-old grandson of the victim's maid for financial motives behind the crime.
The suspect tried to collect a debt of 1,500 kwanzas from the victim for the gardening service he provided to the old woman’s house, which at the time of the events lived alone.
He explained that the accused struck the victim several times, then asphyxiated her with a broomstick and hid her in an inoperative fridge. The forensic medical examination carried out on the corpse confirmed characteristic signs of asphyxiation.
The alleged perpetrator confessed the crime and said he committed it on the night of Sunday March 31.
He is due to be brought before a judge to determine the coercive measure while the criminal proceedings are underway.
This is the first time that someone has been put in cold storage after being murdered in Huambo province, which has an estimated population of 2.7 million people scattered in several municipalities.ALH/TED/AMP
