Saurimo – The Angolan Benedito Manuel, managing director of Catoca Mining Society (SMC) was awarded best manager of the diamond mining industry in Africa during the 14th edition of the African Business Leadership Awards (ABLA).
In a statement to which ANGOP had access, the organizer of the ABLA, said four managers from different countries competed for the prize.
The awarding ceremony will take place between July 17,18 this year at the House of Lords in the UK.
Speaking to ANGOP, Benedito Manuel said the award is a “gratifying surprise” that appreciated the merit of all the workers in the Angolan diamond industry and others, for the results that their labor has brought, improving people's lives and supporting the economy of the country and the continent.
He emphasized that this distinction should not be seen as a reason to boast, but rather “as a challenge to persist in the search for continuous improvement and progressive efficiency in business management”.
The ABLA award is one of the most important platforms for rewarding excellence in the business sector on the African continent, and aim to honor good business practices and excellent managers on the continent.
In addition to diamond mining, SMC has carried out a number of actions in the country as part most notably the construction of schools, hospitals, scholarships, support for youth initiatives in the arts, school meals, vocational training, as well as sports.
Located in Lunda-Sul, Catoca Mining Society has existed for 29 years and is the fourth largest open-cast mine in the world, responsible for more than 75% of Angola's diamond production.
The company employs more than 5,000 people, both directly and indirectly.
