Luanda - The Social Policy Commission of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday in Luanda analysed the text of the voluntary National Report on the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 20/30 agenda, for its delivery in July at the United Nations.
Speaking to the press after the 3rd ordinary meeting of the commission, chaired by the Minister of State for Social Affairs, Carolina Cerqueira, the Minister of Economy and Planning, Sérgio dos Santos, said that the Angolan government will present the report for the first time at the high-level political forum of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission (ECOSOC).
"We will for the first time, in July, present the state of implementation in Angola of the sustainable development objectives, which are 17," he said.
Sérgio dos Santos underlined that there are great achievements in the social sector, not only by the Government but of all the organisations that are committed to improving the social, economic and environmental development indicators.
In this report, to be presented to ECOSOC, the Minister for the Economy and Planning said, the report showed that one of the biggest causes of death in the country, malaria, since 2017 had reduced from 43 percent to 34 percent in 2020 and, in the first quarter of 2021 when the mortality rate from malaria was expected to stand at 10 percent, a rate of seven percent was reached.
According to the Cabinet minister, despite Angola being in a period of serious economic recession and due to the Covid-19 situation, each year growth is being experienced in the non-oil sector, in this case agriculture, fishing, trade and industry, in the first quarter of 2021, while the oil sector contracted 18 percent, the non-oil sector saw growth of one percent.
