Luanda - An Angolan delegation led by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Marcy Lopes, will participate in the 48th session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Human Rights Council, which will be held at the United Nations Palace in Geneva, Switzerland, from January 20 to 31.
According to a press release that reached ANGOP on Friday, the Angolan delegation will present and defend the aforementioned report, in which it will reaffirm its commitment to the protection, defense and promotion of human rights in the country.
The session dedicated to the Republic of Angola will take place on January 23 and will last four hours. The Angolan delegation will also participate in the sessions dedicated to other countries, as well as in parallel sessions.
The delegation will meet with the United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nada al-Nashif, and the President of the Human Rights Council, Jürg Lauber.
Angola joins El Salvador, Italy, Gambia, Bolivia, Fiji, San Marino, Kazakhstan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Madagascar, Iraq, Slovenia, Egypt and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the current cycle of the UPR.
This is the fourth cycle of the review, which began in 2022 and will be consolidated at this 48th session.
According to the United Nations Human Rights Council, the fourth cycle (2022-2027) will strengthen the Universal Periodic Review process through improved implementation of key human rights recommendations.
Since the first Universal Periodic Review conducted by the UN Human Rights Council in 2008, all 193 UN Member States have been reviewed three times.
The UPR is a unique process that involves a periodic review of the human rights reports of all 193 UN member states.
It provides an opportunity for all states to explain what they are doing to improve the human rights situation in their countries and to address challenges to the enjoyment of human rights.
The ultimate goal of the UPR is the exchange of information between States in order to improve the human rights situation in all countries, which has a significant impact on people around the world. AMC/OHA/DAN/AMP
