Ondjiva – The capital of the southern Cunene Province, Ondjiva City, is currently inundated after heavy rains that hit the region, similar to those that occurred in 2008 and 2009 flooding the city.
Following 15 years of drought, the city is now being battered by heavy rains that have already caused the destruction of green belt gardens and limiting the movement of people.
Unlike previous years, homes built in areas at risk are now safeguarded, as a result of the construction of five flood protection dykes.
Gardens destroyed
At least 70 to 80 per cent of the vegetable production of Ondjiva's green belt was destroyed by floods, the president of Ondjiva Urban Cooperatives, José Ndala, said Monday.
Speaking to ANGOP, Mr Ndala said the association controls over 60 community and family vegetable gardens, the majority of which are currently submerged in deep waters.
The second commander of the Civil Protection and Fire Brigade, chief superintendent Virgílio da Fonseca, on his turn, said the situation is under control.
Ondjiva city has 95,628 inhabitants spread across 24 neighborhoods.
