Humpata – At least nine people died and four were seriously injured after a truck driver carrying sand lost the brakes and crashed into a restaurant on Wednesday morning in Humpata municipality, central Huíla province, the local Police spokesperson, chief inspector Sandra Gonçalves.
Simão José, a witness, said all the victims were being transported in the truck and it is thought that they were dockworkers who ended up buried by the sand.
Another person who witnessed the accident was Ana Constantino, who said that the truck was coming from the Alto Bimbe commune at high speed and hit two oxen before crashing into the restaurant.
Serafim Mundombe, spokesman for INEMA, the institution that provided assistance to the injured, said one of the survivors was in a critical condition and was receiving assistance at Lubango's central hospital.
Humpata municipality is 22 kilometres away from Lubango, on the border between Huíla and Namibe. MS/AMP
