Luanda - The Angolan Academy of Letters (AAL) on Saturday in Luanda, congratulated writer João Melo on his election as a foreign corresponding member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
João Melo was elected Wednesday, at the General Assembly of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ALB), to represent Angola and assume the mission of cooperating in the promotion and dissemination of Brazilian culture and literature.
In a statement, the Board of Directors of the Angolan Academy of Letters hopes that this recognition will contribute to the enrichment and enhancement of cultural exchange between Angola and Brazil.
A founding member of the Union of Angolan Writers (UEA) and the Angolan Academy of Letters, João Melo was a deputy to the National Assembly and minister of Social Communication. He graduated in Media and completed a master's degree in Communication and Culture, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The writer, who is also a journalist, publicist and university teacher, also has a vast literary production, which includes poetry, short stories, chronicles and essays. He was also distinguished with the National Prize for Culture and Arts of Angola in the literature category, in 2009 and Literature DSTAngola/Camões in 2023.
João Melo is among the 21 best African writers of 2023, with the literary book “Angola is Wherever | Plant My Field”, distinction made by the cultural magazine African Arguments, published in Kenya.
