Dondo - The opening of the floodgates of the Laúca and Cambambe dams aims to ensure the maintenance, safety and durability of these infrastructures of economic and social impact, the director of Operations of the Electricity Production Company (PRODEL-EP), João Luís Guimarães said on Tuesday.
Speaking to ANGOP in the city of Dondo (Cuanza-Norte province), João Guimarães explained that the reservoir of the Cambambe dam (Cuanza-Norte), with a storage capacity of 96 hectometers per cubic meter of water, has reached a volume that justifies the opening of the floodgates to safeguard the infrastructure.
'The water level in the reservoir is controlled through a maximum height of 130 meters. However, in recent days, it has recorded an increase of 129.50 meters in altitude, almost reaching the maximum volume of water, a situation that forced the opening of the safety signs', he explained.
According to the official, the reservoirs have recorded a high level of water volume, due to the natural rise in the flow of the Kwanza River, as a result of the constant rains in the region.
João Guimarães said that if the water level from the Laúca dam (Malange) increases, there will be a need to open the second floodgate of Cambambe to avoid damage.
Built in 1963, the Cambambe dam has two power plants with a production capacity of 960 MV, seven floodgates, five flood spillways and two surface spillways. Each power station has four generator sets.
The process of water discharge from these reservoirs, which usually occurs every year in the months of March and April, causes floods in the lower Kwanza, with the devastation of agricultural production fields EFM/IMA/OHA/DOJ
