Uíge – The province of Uíge has recorded, in recent days, 19 cases of an outbreak of contagious hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, the head of the Provincial Department of Public Health, Lindeza Chaves reported on Friday.
She explained that the cases, already under treatment, were diagnosed in several neighborhoods in the province's administrative seat, one of which comes from the municipality of Sanza Pombo.
Based on these records, Lindeza Chaves said that actions are underway to segment cases of the disease in the other 16 municipalities of the province, to find out the level of spread of the disease in the region.
Because the disease is rapidly contagious, health technicians advise washing your eyes with cold water, avoiding touching your eyes and, if you feel any symptoms, going to an ophthalmological center.
Causes and symptoms of conjunctivitis
Hemorrhagic conjunctivitis is a highly contagious disease characterized by subconjunctival hemorrhage, sudden swelling of the eyelids and congestion, redness and pain in the eye.
The causes of conjunctivitis can be of different types, the most common being infection caused by some types of pathogens, mainly bacteria, and can also be viruses and fungi.
Conjunctivitis can also be caused by different chemical and physical agents, such as foreign bodies, intense heat, irritating gases, ultraviolet rays, smoke, among others.
The most common initial symptoms are tearing, photophobia, sensitivity to light and redness, she explained, advising people to seek out an ophthalmologist for better guidance whenever they are faced with this clinical condition. JAR/DOJ
