Luanda - The Ministry of Health plans to train 38,000 professionals to meet the sector's needs in the fight against malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, Minister Sílvia Lutucuta said Tuesday in Luanda.

Speaking at the end of the signing of the support grant by the Global Fund to combat malaria, tuberculosis and HIV, for the three-year period 2024/27, the minister said the funding, valued at 126 million dollars, will be allocated to the provinces of Benguela, Cuanza-Sul and Bié.

According to the minister, the increase in investment from 83 million dollars to 126 million dollars, allowed Bié to be included in the program and clearly demonstrates the Global Fund's confidence in strengthening the national health system.

"With this support, we will be able to guarantee more consistency in the national health system, with a large stock at municipal level, increase access to primary care, as well as prioritizing actions that guarantee better coordination on certain aspects, allowing for active community action," the minister said.

The minister underscored that the reactivation of the National Commission to Combat Aids and Major Endemic Diseases, coordinated by the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, reinforces the government’s commitment to combating these diseases and has been exceptional in coordinating responses.

"We will do everything we can to ensure that the implementation of this subsidy is a success for the benefit of the families in these regions," Lutucuta said.

Caty Fall Sow, head of the Global Fund's Africa and Middle East department on her turn said the institution has already invested around four billion dollars in the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, as well as Covid-19 in the country.

Caty Sow explained that the choice of those three provinces to benefit from the project took into account their health profile, mortality rate and mobility, infrastructure, among other factors.

Created in 2002, the Global Fund is an international financial organization that aims to raise and donate resources to prevent and treat infectious diseases, mainly HIV, tuberculosis and malaria, in underdeveloped countries.LIN/MCN/TED/AMP
