Luanda - The Health Ministry (MINSA) has suspended the team on duty at the David Bernardino Hospital following the death of a two-year-old child on Thursday, who was allegedly denied first aid.
Speaking to the press on Saturday, the clinical director of the David Bernardino Hospital, Margarida Correia, explained that the patient was admitted to the emergency room at 11 p.m. on January 1 with a severe traumatic brain injury, as a result of a fall from the first floor of an apartment building and died the following day at 6:40 a.m.
According to the hospital director, the patient was not attended to until 00:38, a delay of 1:38 minutes for a serious emergency case that, according to current protocols, should have received immediate medical attention.
The directors stressed that, given the seriousness of the case, the supervising ministry has decided to set up an investigation committee to look into the facts and has instructed the preventive suspension of the team on duty and the establishment of the appropriate disciplinary process and, if necessary, administrative liability.
MINSA said it reaffirms its commitment to ensuring the highest standards of responsibility and humanity in the care of everyone who comes to its facilities, aware that good life is inalienable and its protection must deserve all the attention and priority of health professionals.
It expresses its condolences to the bereaved family and emphasizes that it will do everything in its power to clarify the circumstances in which the unfortunate event occurred and will cooperate with legal institutions such as the Criminal Investigation Department and the Office of the Attorney General to clarify the case.
