Benguela - The maternity ward at the Benguela General Hospital (HGB) records between nine and eighteen caesarean births every day, the director Leovegildo Coronho, said Wednesday.
Speaking to the press, he said that apart from the act of donating equipment and expendable material for the aforementioned maternity hospital, an initiative by the Non-Government Organization (NGO) JAM for Africa, the number of caesarean sections is very high, adding that normal daily births in that unit reach 35.
The gynecologist said that the institution has capacity for 78 beds, but that they are currently insufficient to meet demand.
“Last month, for example, we treated around 1,900 patients, with a stay of around three days, which makes it difficult for women in labor to move around”, he revealed.
According to the doctor, taking into account that most pregnant women arrive in labor, some of them have to stay for a few hours.
“If is a patient has a natural childbirth, that patient can remain in the maternity ward for six to eight hours. In a way, this helps to overcome this constraint”, he stated.
However, the official said that a new ultrasound room has been opened, which will improve prenatal care and facilitate the situation of women in labor, mainly in the municipality of Benguela, who do not have the resources to benefit from this service in other institutions.
The HGB Maternity ward has 40 doctors. Of these, four are specialists in obstetrics-gynecology and 36 are in training.
Doctors have the support of 133 professionals, distributed between nursing, therapeutic diagnosis, among other areas.
Regarding the facilities, it has an emergency bank, delivery rooms, gynecology, neonatology, surgery operating room, among others. TC/CRB/MRA/DOJ
