Uíge – At least 120 children born to HIV-positive mothers were born free of HIV/AIDS in the health centres of Uíge province in 2023, as part of the "Born Free to Shine" campaign on the initiative of the First Lady of the Republic, Ana Dias Lourenço.
The information was disclosed Tuesday in the northerns Uíge Province by the Provincial Health Director, Kavenaweteko Malavo.
The official added that there had been an increase of six children born free of the disease compared to the 2022 figures.
He considered the campaign result in the region, given that it is contributing for the reduction of HIV/AIDS cases in newborns in different hospital institutions.
The Kavenaweteko Malavo emphasized the sensitisation carried out to pregnant women who are infected with the disease through a joint programme between the Provincial Health Office and other organizations involved in the project.
Available data highlights that in 2023 in the province, 19 people died of the disease, recording 27 deaths compared to the year of 2022.
In the same period, 42,000 people were tested for AIDS, which resulted in 584 positive cases, compared to 28,820 people (404 positive cases). NM/OHA/MRA/DOJ
