Caxito - Three hundred and one patients were treated during the three-day screening campaign for neurodevelopmental disorders, held at the 'Reverendo Guilherme Pereira Inglés' general hospital in Caxito, Angolan northern province of Bengo.
Neurodevelopmental disorders are neurological problems that can interfere with the acquisition, retention or application of specific skills or sets of information that may involve dysfunction in attention, memory, perception, language, problem solving or social interaction.
Of the patients treated, 171 children come from Luanda, 120 from Bengo and the rest from the provinces of Cuanza Sul, Zaire and Huambo, as reported today, Wednesday, by the general director of the hospital unit, Geovani Malega, when presenting the data of the campaign.
He made it known that the campaign was combined with the training component of local staff, to allow it to expand and serve a greater number of people, remembering that intervention for identified patients will begin from January 2025.
It is believed that there are still many patients who, for numerous reasons, were unable to participate in the campaign, so next year, in addition to the interventions to be carried out, they will continue with screening, both processes being completely free.
Geovani Malega reaffirmed that the project has the support of the Ministry of Health, and the orientation is to try to reach as many families as possible and reassure them that they will all be taken care of.
In turn, the doctor specialized in ABA therapy (in English Applied Behavior Analysis), Line Duarte considered the numbers achieved to be worrying, because being in Bengo, the patients are mostly from Luanda, although she received many messages of satisfaction from the opening of the campaign that considered it a success because they managed to help many families.
He made it known that after collecting the data, the team will work on preparing therapeutic plans for each family, so that interventions can begin from January onwards, aiming to give patients a better quality of life.
ABA Therapy is a therapeutic method that stands for Applied Behavior Analysis, which consists of an approach based on scientific principles of behavior that aims to modify behaviors, teach skills and promote the autonomy of children with neurodevelopmental disorders.
During the campaign, the patients were also observed by the occupational therapist and master in sensory integration, Carlos Duarte, who works in daily life activities such as dressing, putting on shoes, bathing and brushing teeth, which are affected areas and end up damaging the mental health of those responsible for education, as well as the part that has to do with feeling, which in many cases is very sensitive (sensory).
