Luanda – The coordinator of the Expanded Vaccination Program (PAV), Felismina Neto, announced on Tuesday that over 1.5 million children are expected to be immunized against polio, from the 6th to the 8th of this month, in the Province of Luanda.
Speaking to ANGOP, Felismina Neto revealed that the province will carry out the third round of vaccination against polio, with the involvement of more than 12,000 census staff.
She said revealed that more than 1.8 million doses of vaccine are available, a quantity above the needed amount according to the target group, to respond to any eventuality during the campaign.
The official explained that given Luanda's population density, the logistics distribution strategy came from the provincial management and even encompassed neighborhood coordinations, to allow the vaccination of as many children as possible.
She also informed that four-month-old babies, who must receive their first doses of bivalent and injectable oral polio, can also take the vaccine at this stage of the campaign.
On the other hand, she regretted the fact that some condominium residents prevented brigade members from vaccinating their children.
Therefore, she appealed for the collaboration of all parents and guardians, in order to pass on the information and join the campaign.
Regarding the benefits of vaccination campaigns, the official highlighted that, since 2010, Luanda has not registered cases of wild poliovirus.
She added that campaigns have been carried out to guarantee the complete protection of children under five years of age, due to the movement of people and goods from endemic countries, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In the previous phases, she highlighted, the target group was more than 1.4 million children in the first round, and more than 1.5 million in the second one, having exceeded the targets.
