Luena - The conjoined twins recently born at the Moxico Provincial Maternity Hospital were transferred on Friday to the "David Bernardino" Children's Hospital in Luanda for surgery.
The twins, who weigh three kilos and eight hundred grams, were born connected through the abdomen.
Following the mother's request for assistance, the local government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, provided the logistical conditions for the transportation of the children to be observed in a specialized hospital and then separated by surgery.
Speaking to the press, the Governor of Moxico, Ernesto Muangala, assured that all the conditions were in place for the children to receive adequate medical care.
"We hope for good results so that the babies will grow up healthy," the governor said.
The director of the Moxico Provincial Health Office, Tiago Mario, reiterated that the babies are stable, with no breathing or breastfeeding difficulties, and that the twins will be examined to determine which organ is affected and the type of surgery they need.
The children's mother, Margarida José, 33, said she was "relieved" by the government's support.
According to data, the first case of its kind was registered at the Moxico Provincial Maternity Hospital in January 2017, when the twins were connected at the head. MT/TC/HD/CF/AMP
