Cunhinga - The lack of a surgical specialist has so far been affecting the operation of the surgery room at the Vouga Missionary Hospital, in the municipality of Cunhinga, in the province of Bié, ANGOP has learned.
Speaking on Friday, the director of the health unit, Pedro Mango, stressed that due to the time it has been unused, the state-of-the-art equipment installed in the operating room is deteriorating.
“We have stopped performing surgeries for about two years. All patients who require surgical intervention are transferred to the Dr. Walter Strangway hospital, in Cuito.”
He said that in addition to medical surgery, six other specialists are also needed to provide obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine, dentistry and X-ray services.
With a capacity for 300 hospital beds, only half of the beds are currently being used due to insufficient staff.
The hospital built in 1954 underwent rehabilitation work and it was equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment equipment between 2014 and 2022.
It has 47 employees, including one doctor, four senior nurses, 32 mid-level nursing technicians and the rest are hospital support workers.
The municipality of Cunhinga has 98,640 inhabitants, distributed across one commune, 128 villages, 12 neighborhoods, 11 large villages and six small ones.
It controls 19 health units, including two hospitals, one mission, one maternal and child center, two health centers and 14 health posts. LB/BAN/MS/MRA/DOJ
