Luena - The Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, said Wednesday in Sumbe, Kwanza Sul province, that the Angolan Government remained focused on eradicating malaria, considered the main cause of death in the country.
He was speaking during the launch of the second phase of the distribution campaign for long-lasting treated mosquito nets, which is benefiting the population of the provinces of Kwanza Sul and Benguela, with over 2.844.576 nets.
According to the secretary of State, Angola intends to achieve "the objectives of Sustainable Development," an international commitment to which it is a signatory, which foresees, among other actions, ending the epidemic of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other transmissible diseases by 2030.
He said that the campaign to distribute long-lasting treated mosquito nets to the population is closely linked to the priority that the government has dedicated to the Health sector, for the well-being of Angolans.
In 2021, he recalled, in Angola 9.1 million cases of malaria were reported, with an incidence of 284 cases per thousand inhabitants, resulting in 13,676 deaths.
He said that malaria was the main public health problem in the country, and was the main cause of illness and death, absenteeism from work and school, and was one of the causes of low birth weight, anaemia in pregnant women and maternal mortality.
